Blessing of the Animals St. Paul's Cathedral San Diego October 7,2012
My Sister Kathy and John Heaney her husband were lead ushers this Sunday October 7 ,2012 at at the 10:30 mass at St. Pauls Cathedral, the additional Feast of St. Francis of Assisi the Blessing of the animals was celebrated in conjunction with the mass. The congregation attended and many of them brought their beloved pets in all varieties of shapes, sizes and colors. There were canines, felines, rodents, turtles and other forms of life. The animals participated in the opening procession walking with their owners down the aisles stopping at their respecive seats where they remained until the procession at the end of the mass where they all filed out to await the blessing ceremony to begin. Everyone gathered behind the Cathedral where individual stations manned by the priests were set up using a bale of hay to sit on, a fresh bowl of water for the thirsty animals and of course the holy water for the actual blessing by the priests. Many people and animals attended, the weather was warm and sunny and a good time was had by all at this yearly celebration. Information about this progressive thinking Episcopal Clergy and Staff can be reviewed at
